GOD IS GREAT

I’ve been reading a new book by Admiral James Stavridis (Ret.), titled Sailing True North. In summary, it’s a compilation of ten stories of ten people whose character has made a tremendous impact in their sphere of influence. As I read this book it reminds me of the many years I spent on the world’s oceans and how a part of me still yearns for that time of my life. Of course, my desire for the ocean is not for the inevitable separation from family, but the peace that this time alone creates. This time spent alone, reflecting can be intoxicating in as far as it provides an exclusive opportunity to draw near to God away from the many distractions that being at sea shields you from.

I can remember many nights staring out into the night sky and thinking how big God really is. My last ship before retiring from the US Navy was the missile cruiser USS Thomas S. Gates. As I walked around and performed my daily task, it was never lost on me that I ate, worked and slept on a steal 9600-ton floating town capable of destroying a small country. And yet, as you pull away from the little spot on the ocean that we occupied, you begin to realize how small we really are.

The vastness of the ocean is great, but God is greater. God has no equal.  Isaiah 40:12 (Msg) gives us a glimpse in the majesty of God greatness. Who has scooped up the ocean in his two hands, or measured the sky between his thumb and little finger?  Only God Can Do That! I have sailed these oceans. I have gazed into the eyes of these skies. And I still stand in awe of the greatness of God. The greatness of God’s power! “… and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power.” Ephesians 1:19.

Consider the awesome God we serve. He holds the whole world in his hands, and yet with all this power and greatness, he finds time to love you and I. Think about that.
“O LORD, what is man that you regard him, or the son of man that you think of him? Psalms 144:3. Yes, in the vastness of this great universe, God thinks about you, because He loves you.
